Tips To Care For Seniors With Knee Pain

Is your aging loved one suffering from knee pain? As people grow older, it is common for them to experience knee pain occasionally. Do you know what causes this problem? Well, there are a number of things responsible and some of them include:

  • Obesity
  • Stiffness of joints
  • Dislocation of bones
  • Trauma
  • History of playing high-impact sports

In addition to the above, osteoarthritis and the breakdown of cartilage are one of the leading causes of knee pain in the older adults. It can result in pain, swelling, and limited movement of joints. Many seniors with knee problems find it difficult to carry out their daily living activities with ease.

How can you care for a loved one with knee pain?

There are a number of options available that can reduce pain and help your senior family member spend his or her twilight years peacefully.

  • Maintain an ideal body weight – It is important for seniors to maintain a healthy weight if they want to spend their twilight years comfortably. Obesity increases the burden on joints and results in additional wear of the cartilage, and even bone, plus severe pain. If your loved one is obese, help them shed those extra pounds by encouraging them to exercise daily. Low-impact exercises are best for the older adults. Even losing 5 or 10 pounds can decrease their pain.
  • Proper medication management – The doctor may prescribe certain pain relief medicines to reduce the joint pain or joint inflammation. Make sure your loved one takes his or her medications regularly and as the doctor prescribed.
  • Knee Replacement – If the pain is severe enough and affecting the daily living of your loved one, they can consider knee replacement surgery. However, make sure to consult their doctor to get an official diagnosis and treatment plan.

Seniors with knee pain may have limited mobility and find daily living tasks challenging. Consider hiring a professional caregiver who will not only look after their safety, but also assist with the basic living tasks.
